Virtual Pet Games That Work Offline (No Wi-Fi Needed)

Several virtual pet games work fully offline. Chill Capy runs care, mini-games, streaks and its wardrobe on your phone, and only ads and purchases need a connection. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete was rebuilt in 2024 as a paid offline version. Apple advertises Apple Arcade games, including Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom, as playable online or offline. And a physical Tamagotchi doesn’t need a phone at all. Many free pet games do need a connection, so test yours in airplane mode before a flight.

Why do some pet games need the internet? #

A pet game doesn’t technically need a connection to feed a cartoon animal, but many are built around online services:

  • Ads. Free games often load ads from the internet, and some block play when they can’t.
  • Cloud saves and accounts. If your pet lives on a server, the game has to reach it to load.
  • Live events. Timed events, shops and daily rewards are often controlled from a server.
  • Anti-cheat. Some games check your clock online to stop players changing the time on their phone.

Games that keep everything on the device are the ones that work reliably on a plane, a subway or a spotty rural connection.

Chill Capy #

Chill Capy is a virtual pet about a capybara who lives in a hot spring, and it’s built to run without a server. There’s no account or login, and your capybara lives on your phone. Care, mini-games, streaks, daily rewards and the wardrobe all work offline. Only ads and purchases need a connection.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete #

Nintendo ended the free, online Pocket Camp on November 28, 2024, and released Pocket Camp Complete on December 2, 2024. The new version is a one-time purchase ($19.99 at launch), works offline and has no in-app purchases. You decorate a campsite and befriend animal villagers. It’s more of a cozy life game than a strict pet game, but the animals are the reason to play.

Apple Arcade games #

Apple’s Arcade page says you can “play online or offline across your Apple devices,” with no ads and no in-app purchases. The subscription costs $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year as of September 2026 and can be shared with up to five family members. It includes Bandai’s Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom. Some games still need a connection for parts of their content, so open each game online first to finish any downloads.

A real Tamagotchi #

The original handhelds are the most offline pets there are. The Tamagotchi Original, Nano and Paradise lines run on batteries with no phone involved. The one exception is the Tamagotchi Uni, which uses Wi-Fi for Tamaverse, its online space, though the pet itself runs on the device. Keep in mind that a Tamagotchi can die if you ignore it on a long trip. We explain how quickly in do Tamagotchis die?.

What works offline in Chill Capy? #

Here’s what to expect with no connection:

FeatureWorks offline?
Feeding, bathing, soaking, sleepYes
All three mini-gamesYes
Streaks, daily rewards and daily questsYes. They use your phone’s date, not a server
Seasonal eventsYes. They switch on from your phone’s date
Playdates by QR code or pasted Capy CodeYes
Care and streak remindersYes. They’re local notifications
Rewarded ads (energy refill, coin top-up, doubling rewards)No
Chill Club and gem purchases, restoring purchasesNo

Two practical points. First, since ads can’t load offline, the optional ad-based energy refill isn’t available, so plan on letting him sleep to recharge before a long flight. Second, you won’t see interstitial ads offline either.

The trade-off of running without a server is that there’s no cloud save. Your capybara lives in the app’s storage on your phone, so deleting the app deletes him, and moving to a new phone depends on your device’s own backup.

Not pets, but good offline capybara games #

If you want more capybara on a flight, two other games from the same developer also run offline. Capybara Crossing is an endless road-crossing arcade game with 19 capybaras to collect, and only its ads need a connection. Work Capy is a focus timer with a capybara in a hot spring, and it needs no network at all.

How to test any pet game offline before a trip #

It takes five minutes and saves a frustrating flight:

  1. Open the game with a connection and let it finish any updates or downloads.
  2. Turn on airplane mode, and switch Wi-Fi off too.
  3. Force-close the game and reopen it. Some games only check for a connection at launch.
  4. Play the core loop. Feed your pet, play a mini-game, and open the shop.
  5. Close and reopen once more to confirm your progress saved.
  6. Note what failed. If only ads and the store break, you’re fine. If the game won’t load, find another one for the trip.

Tips for keeping a pet happy while you travel #

  • Top everything up before you board. A full pet lasts longest.
  • Put it to sleep for the flight if the game has a sleep action. Energy usually recovers while it sleeps.
  • Check how the game handles time away. Chill Capy caps stat loss at 18 hours, so even a long trip leaves him fine. Other games are less forgiving. Our guide to virtual pet games where your pet doesn’t die lists the gentlest ones.
  • Expect time-zone weirdness. Games that use your phone’s clock follow its time zone, so a long flight can make a “day” feel shorter or longer.
