The best virtual pet games in 2026 are Chill Capy for a Tamagotchi-style routine without the guilt, Neko Atsume 2 for the most hands-off collecting, and Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom if you want the official brand on Apple Arcade. Pou and My Talking Tom 2 are the classic feed-and-play pets. Finch, Cats & Soup and Pokémon Sleep each put a pet on top of something else: self-care, idle cooking or your sleep.
Every game below was listed on the stores in September 2026. Prices and business models come from store listings and official pages, and they change, so check the listing before you buy.

1. Chill Capy: best for a daily routine without the guilt #
Chill Capy is a classic care game about a capybara who lives in a hot spring and wears a yuzu on his head. He has four meters (food, energy, clean and fun) that drift in real time, and you look after him with eight snacks, baths, onsen soaks and sleep. Three short mini-games (Yuzu Drop, Bubble Pop and Steam Says) earn coins for 26 cosmetics and ten decorations. His hot spring follows your real time of day, and other animals move in as he levels up.
What sets it apart is the rule that he never dies, never leaves and never scolds you. Stat loss stops after 18 hours away. There’s no account, it works offline, and friends can meet through QR-code playdates.
The catch: there are no real stakes, and there’s no cloud save. Most ads are rewarded videos you choose, with a short interstitial after every third mini-game at most, which the optional Chill Club removes. We cover it in full in our capybara virtual pet game guide.
2. Neko Atsume 2: best for hands-off play #
Hit-Point’s sequel came out in October 2024. You leave food and toys in a yard and see which cats wander in, photograph them, and collect their gifts. There’s nothing to keep alive, so it’s the easiest pet here to fit into a busy week.
The catch: it isn’t a care game. If you want to look after one animal, it will feel thin. For similar games, see games like Neko Atsume.
3. Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom: best official Tamagotchi #
Bandai’s Tamagotchi game arrived on Apple Arcade in 2024. Arcade games have no ads or in-app purchases, and Apple says they can be played online or offline. The subscription is $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year and can be shared with up to five family members.
The catch: it’s Apple only, and it’s worth it only if you already have Arcade or want an official Tamagotchi specifically. Our guide to the Tamagotchi app for iPhone and Android covers the other options.
4. Pou: best for nostalgia #
Paul Salameh’s alien blob has been around since 2012 and is estimated at about 100 million downloads. You feed it, bathe it, play mini-games for coins, and spend them on outfits, hats and wallpaper, and you can visit friends’ Pous. It had a revival in 2024 thanks to TikTok videos of Pou plushies.
The catch: on the App Store it’s now a $1.99 download that still has ads and in-app purchases.
5. My Talking Tom 2: best for kids who like silly #
Outfit7’s cat has been a phone pet since 2013, and the sequel came out in November 2018. You feed Tom, take him to the bathroom, tuck him into bed and play mini-games, and he repeats what you say in a funny voice.
The catch: it’s loud and ad-heavy. Great for a giggly kid, tiring for an adult who wants calm.
6. Finch: best for self-care #
Finch’s tagline is “Take care of your pet by taking care of yourself.” You set small goals like journaling, a breathing exercise or a mood check-in, and your bird grows as you complete them. It’s rated 9+ on the App Store, and Finch Plus is an optional subscription.
The catch: it’s a wellness habit app first and a pet game second. If you want to play with a pet, it’s the wrong tool.
7. Cats & Soup: best idle pet game #
Originally developed by Hidea and published by Neowiz, Cats & Soup launched in 2021. Cats cook soup and gather ingredients on their own, including while you’re away, and you decorate their forest and add more cats. It’s rated 4+, in-app purchases run from $0.99 to $11.99 on the App Store, and ads are optional ones you watch for boosts.
The catch: there’s more upgrading and menu-tapping than in Neko Atsume.
8. Pokémon Sleep: best for turning sleep into a game #
Launched in July 2023, Pokémon Sleep had passed 30 million downloads by April 2026. You feed a Snorlax berries during the day, your phone tracks your sleep with its microphone and motion sensor, and the kind of sleep you get decides which Pokémon show up in the morning. It’s free with in-app purchases.
The catch: your phone has to sit on your bed all night, which won’t suit everyone.
What about a physical Tamagotchi? #
If you want a pet that isn’t on your phone at all, Bandai’s current lines include the Tamagotchi Original, Nano, Connection, Uni and the Paradise, the newest design from 2025. They’re the real deal, including the part where a neglected pet can die.
